Practicing Equity as a Supervisor

In this session, participants will learn to develop strategies and practices that support personal, professional, and organizational goals for staff development. Participants will learn to apply theories on equity-based leadership, management, and decision making to how they manage and supervise their diverse teams.


As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how they can use equity-based leadership theories in staff development
  2. Explain how the six forms of power (Perry, 2021) can be used to empower their staff
  3. Employ one strategy to support organizational change

About our 01/17/23 Facilitators

JennWells

Dr. Jenn Wells (she/her/hers) received her B.A. from UCLA in 2007 and received her M.A. degree in Higher Education Administration from New York University. She recently completed her Doctorate of Education in Organizational Change & Leadership at the University of Southern California. Her doctoral dissertation focused on organizational resistance toward chief diversity officers in small liberal arts colleges. Jenn’s career in education focuses on student leadership with an emphasis on identity development and social justice education. Jenn developed a deep passion for the empowerment of girls, women, non-binary, and transgender students after she worked at Mills College, Barnard College, and Scripps College. Her experience in higher education included emergency response, new student orientation, student support services, student activities, residential life, and honors programs. In the summer of 2020 Jenn transitioned away from higher education, and she currently works as the inaugural Director of Equity and Inclusion for the Marlborough School, a 7th-12th grade independent girls' school in Los Angeles. In her current position, Jenn works as a chief diversity officer, directing campus-wide leadership, programming, and initiatives aimed at supporting the School’s commitment to inclusion, equity, and accountability.

Nick Daily (He/They), Founder & CEO, LuvServedDaily Consulting

Nick Daily (He/They) is a Black Queer person whose values are LuvServedDaily. He has been facilitating workshops, and consultation for over a decade.bPrior to his full-time work as Founder and CEO of LuvServedDaily Consulting, he served as the chief diversity officer at a large public community college. He loves playing and watching friends and family play video games, karaoke, and road cycling! Throughout life and career, Nick Daily centers the humanity and experiences of everyone trying to make a positive change in the world. The Luv and joy at the core of his work carries throughout the style and content of the diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops Nick Daily provides on college campuses and organizations throughout the country.

Founder and CEO of New World Education (NWE), an education consulting organization, Mandla Kayise has served thousands of students across the Southern California area, in Northern California and other locations around the country. NWE specializes in college access, student retention and student leadership development. Grounded in our dynamic approach to student engagement and success, the Holistic Unlimited Student Empowerment (HOUSE) Method, NWE provides tools and strategies for academic development and student empowerment among university, community college and high school students and parents. NWE has worked with students, staff and program directors at UCLA, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, University of Texas, Stanford University, Cal Poly Pomona, Pitzer College, Santa Monica College, Rio Hondo College, Cerritos College, Antelope Valley College, Coastline Community College and El Camino College, as well as students and parents in the Inglewood Unified, Los Angeles Unified, Compton Unified and Alhambra School Districts. Mandla is a graduate of UCLA and is active in the UCLA Alumni Association and in several community organizations. He is a member of the Los Angeles Reparations Advisory Commission.
